When you’re in debt, the idea of extra money is both enticing and a bit of a joke. How nice it would be to have “extra” money, right? Of course, any extra you make would only go into the debt you owe. It feels hopeless and pointless. I get it. But let’s look at that a little bit. Why should you earn extra money to pay off debt? There is clearly a need to put more money into the debt you owe and yet that money isn’t coming in. Unless you are resigned to never paying off your debt, you know you need to make a change. I know because your here that that isn’t the case. However, I recognize that it’s hard not to think of it as just throwing your money away.

With some debts, it can feel that way. That’s why it is so important to have a good plan for eliminating your debt by making smart calculated payments that will get you back on top in a reasonable amount of time. The best way to get where you need to go is to start a solid plan followed by a side job to bring in a little extra income so you can reach the finish line faster. If you want to earn extra money, but aren’t sure where to start, here are five easy areas to explore where you could bring in enough to get free of your debt in much less time.

Delivery Service

The first thing most people think of is delivery, which is why it’s first on my list. I want to get it out of the way, but I would be remiss if I did not include it as a solid option to earn extra money to pay off debt. You could work for any number of companies that provide home delivery through a mobile app. More people than ever are succumbing to the desire not to leave their house and deal with the mess. It’s so easy to just have somebody bring your food and groceries to you, so it’s not a bad idea to get on the right financial side of that equation.

When you have a delivery job like this, you can work as little or as much as you like. It can be a full-time gig if that is what you want, but mostly it’s a good way to work a little bit of extra income into your schedule.

Online Commerce

You probably like to stay at home, too. I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t. The only thing better than a freelance job that requires you to drive all the time is one that doesn’t. You can earn money from home by selling things online. Reselling is a job that can take as little or as much investment as you have resources for. It doesn’t take a lot to get started and you don’t have to make anything. All you have to do is buy low and sell high. Like the stock market. It’s okay not to have a big investment strategy on this, it only takes a cursory knowledge of the marketplace that you can get from scanning a few barcodes. eBay, Amazon, and Poshmark are all good places to begin this side business. You can put as little or as much into it as you like in order to earn extra money to pay off debt.

Shopping

One of the more enticing, too good to be true prospects is that you can earn money from shopping. To some extent, this is a real thing, but it’s not a primary source of income. In a sense, it blurs the lines between saving money and making money. Still, it can be a pretty painless way to earn extra money to pay off debt. There are different ways to go about this:

  • Get paid to buy things as a secret shopper.
  • Get rebates for buying specific items from specific retailers
  • Take Pictures of products and Displays for specific retailers and get reimbursed for your time.

There are mobile apps available for download and freelancing sites such as TaskRabbit.

Crafting

One thing you can do if you have a crafty or creative side is to make something you can sell. Instead of buying products way below retail so you can resell them at a profit, sites like Etsy allow you to use your talent to create a sum that is worth more than its parts. By coming up with a crafty DIY that pools raw materials and makes something fresh and distinctive, you can make a decent amount of money for your time and effort.

Time and effort is one thing this type of side gig requires in addition to some upfront costs. However, it has the potential to be one of the most exciting and rewarding sources of income out there. If this appeals to you, it is worth the extra work.

Sell Your Things

Finally, the easiest way to earn extra money to pay off debt is just to sell off what you have. It has a certain poetry to it eliminating the things that got you into debt in the first place. selling your things puts extra money in your pocket and it helps you to embrace a minimalist lifestyle. A more streamlined home environment is freeing and helps you to refrain from the type of consumerism that leads to further debt.
