Minimalist Challenge Update / 01

Yesterday, I wrote about how I’m undertaking The Minimalist Challenge for the month of June. Here is an update for ya:

Day 1, Get rid of 1 thing:

  • SELL – Old Dell Laptop. It’s been sitting in my closest for far too long and everytime I see it I think, “I need to do something with that thing.” Maybe I can sell it to a family that wants something for their kid to learn to type on? It feels good to finally be taking some action to get that thing out of my life. Just by deciding to take some action I’m starting to feel lighter.

Day 2, Get rid of 2 things:

  • SELL – These 2 rugs. They are cute and work fine with one of those grippy, rubber things under them but they don’t feel like the safest things to be on your floors when you’re carrying around a baby and they gather up under your feet. It’s time to let these bad boys spread some wings and fly far, far away from here! Buh-bye.

Do you think you’re going to do the challenge too? What would you get rid of first?

Also! On Twitter, @sathlondonshona, told me that there is a hashtag #minsgame where you can follow along with everyone else who is doing the challenge. So fun!

I totally need to take this challenge! I got married last November and I still have a bunch of stuff I bought for the wedding that I need to sell. A go-pro, about 50 vases, even my wedding dress. Operation Minimalist Challenge has begun!

This is great, Anna! We just moved and are using the opportunity to purge, mostly clothes and books. I am big into consignment stores, so I’ll be making the rounds later today to see what cast-offs we can sell!

I bought a giant teddy bear from Goodwill for my Miley Cyrus costume for Tour de Fat last year (because I am a classy lady). For Day 1, I am finally getting it out of my house and back to Goodwill where hopefully some child will never find out its history. It’s the start of my donate pile.

My boyfriend and I went through all of our clothes, and yes I did get rid of the: “this is cute, maybe i’ll wear it again soon” (but obviously haven’t touched it in over a year).

For Day 1 I got rid of a make-up flyer (“this is the latest trend”), and for Day 2, a bording pass and that paper folder that holds a hotel key.
Still no day 3 or 4, but this update from you has motivated me.
If I “only” get rid of closer to 500 paper things this June, I’ll be SO happy.

I decided to go about the challenge in slightly different way. Rather than getting rid of 1 thing on day 1….2 things on day 2….etc. I am just shooting to get ride of 465 things by the end of june. I’m up to 47.

I also have a very old laptop to sell but I’m need to wipe it clean before I do it. Did you do that with yours? If so, do you need the reformatting disks that came with it? I hope not!

I have expanded this idea to the once a month donation box to our local SPCA. It became a breeze with a simple routine. I have one box in the garage dedicated to this pupose. At the end the month. I log the items in a spread sheet (Goodwill provides a tool on their website). Then I load it in the car, drop it off, pick up the donation receipt, and repeat each month.
