Sometimes once you’re already deeeeep in it (like from law school loans, cough) it feels like any small progress you make is irrelevant. :/ Any tips for having small goals/keeping motivated? Love your site!

    Hi Maddy,

For a really long time I felt the same way you do right now. I have found that trying to focus on small successes I have daily like bringing lunch to work or selling something I never use, help keep me going. Soon enough all the little successes start adding up to bigger successes. Also doing something no matter how small is going to get you further than doing nothing.

The only reason I don’t take the pledge right now is that I am pregnant…with insurance that doesn’t cover maternity…and in about 6 weeks, $4500 will be going on the credit card to cover the birth of our baby. After that, we will be going on a strict spending diet so that we can pay off what we owe.

Jennifer, why are you waiting six weeks til after the birth of the baby to go on a strict spending diet? Why not NOW so you can put less than 4,500 on a credit card, where you are going to presumably be paying interest.

Thanks for this post today. I’m STRUGGLING to keep afloat. And what’s holding me back? Myself; I’m afraid I can’t do it…and I allow myself to be tempted to spend, spend, spend. Just moved into an apt by myself for the first time in 3 years…ouch to the pocketbook. And I just started a new job that’s not paying what I thought it would…ouch again. I visit your site frequently for pick-me-ups, so thanks!

This site is sooooo encouraging! I have had serious doubts as to whether I could actually do this, to resist buying the little things, and nickel and diming myself into debt. I am incredibly motivated now though, mainly because in TWO WEEKS of going on the strictest of strict spending diets I could compose for myself, I have already paid off almost two credit cards. I had noooooo idea how much the little purchases were adding up. Thank you so much for the encouragement, Anna!
